The Garden Soirée

To mark the opening of the new Halcyon Jardin Clubhouse, residents were invited to a Garden Soirée–themed evening designed to celebrate community, connection, and a new shared space.

I was invited to create a live painting during the event, capturing both the newly opened clubhouse and the people who would bring it to life. The artwork was completed live on the night and is now permanently displayed inside the clubhouse as a visual memory of the opening celebration.

The brief

The client wanted a wow moment . Something guests could engage with in real time, and not just observe from a distance. The artwork needed to:

  • Reflect the Garden Soirée theme
  • Celebrate the new clubhouse as a shared place
  • Include the residents themselves in addition to the architecture
  • Feel joyful, social, and future-focused

Because this was a community-focused event, it was important to me that guests could recognise themselves in the final artwork and feel a sense of belonging to the space.

Building the painting

The composition was designed as a group portrait set within the clubhouse environment . I began by painting the architectural structure of the new building first, anchoring the scene before gradually layering in colour, atmosphere, and people.

One of the challenges with live event painting is balancing accuracy with flow, especially when working with changing light, movement, and colour. As the evening unfolded, I incorporated the event’s guests, tones and energy into the painting, adding engaging details and engaging with the guests.

The newly planted palm trees and landscaping were intentionally painted slightly more lush and abundant. A painting has the unique ability to reflect not just what is , but what will be , offering a glimpse into the future life of the space.

Part of the evening

As the painting developed, guests kept returning to watch it evolve. People gathered, pointed, laughed, and searched for themselves and their neighbours in the artwork. Small moments of recognition turned into shared conversations and connection.

This is where live painting really shines: it becomes a social focal point. Guests were watching an artist work and they were seeing themselves become part of the story.

Throughout the evening, music played, people danced, and the atmosphere remained light, warm, and celebratory. The painting absorbed that energy as it came to life.

The practical details

  • Arrival & bump-in: Pre-event arrival with on-site contact for gated access
  • Space required: Small footprint near guest flow without interrupting movement
  • Live painting duration: 4 hours
  • Artwork completion: Finished and varnished on the night
  • Pack-down: Clean, efficient, and venue-friendly
  • Outcome: Artwork handed over the same evening

A lasting artwork

  • Medium: Acrylic on canvas
  • Size: 76 × 76 cm
  • Finish: Varnished on site
  • Style: Contemporary impressionistic realism
  • Current location: Halcyon Jardin Clubhouse

The artwork captures not just the building, but the feeling of the night, movement, colour, people, and possibility.

The finished painting was installed in the clubhouse, where it now acts as a permanent reminder of the opening night and the people who shared it.

Rather than the artwork being packed away, it continues to live in the space, seen daily by residents who attended the opening and those who didn’t.

Created together

This event was delivered in collaboration with Melbourne Entertainment Company , P3 Events , and Stockland , working together to create a seamless and celebratory experience for the Halcyon Jardin community.

Planning a similar event?

Is the artwork finished on the night?

Yes. For this event, the painting was fully completed and varnished on site and handed over the same evening.

Most of the time I do take the artwork back to the studio for finishing touches and then deliver after the event.

How do you decide what moment to paint?

The composition is planned in advance, focusing on the key setting and atmosphere, then refined live as the event unfolds.

How much space do you need?

A small footprint near guest flow is ideal. 2×2m is typically enough.

Can the artwork be displayed afterwards?

Yes. The final piece is ready to hang and designed to live on as a legacy artwork in offices, clubhouses, or shared spaces.
